In today's wireless world, the consumers' market drives requirements such as low cost, small size, and high performance, to produce portable systems that can fit in the palm of a hand. In the past twenty years or so, this trend for miniaturisation has led to the replacement of some traditional bulky microwave components with smaller RF solid-state circuits, such as planar monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC) and miniature hybrid microwave integrated circuits (MHMIC).; This thesis presents an MHMIC direct frequency down-converter for 20 GHz applications (100 MHz intermediate frequency (IF)), which has been developed as part of the Communications Research Centre (CRC) and the Defence Research Establishment Ottawa (DREO) Portable EHF Satellite Communication Project. Due to their larger size, conventional waveguide components have limited use on the terminal side of this project. The use of uniplanar technology, such as coplanar waveguides (CPW), presents a myriad of advantages. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
