The problem to be considered is the protection of structures undergoing potentially damaging deformations due to earthquake excitation. Given the unknown nature of the disturbance, an “instantaneous” optimal control method is developed which will re-optimize itself at very small time intervals to account for the effects of the disturbance in the previous time interval. A method of protecting a structure using an “interferometric” mass to prevent transmission of seismic energy to the structure is also proposed and modeled. The STARS package of finite element codes is employed to model the soil-structure system and to implement various control schemes.
