An integrative approach to parent-child attachment through the work of Bowlby, Ainsworth, Winnicott, Fairbairn, and Kohut: A theoretical dissertation (John Bowlby, Donald Winnicott, Mary Ainsworth, Ronald Fairbairn, Heinz Kohut).
This dissertation explores the role of primary caretakers in attachment from the perspective of the theories of Bowlby, Ainsworth, Winicott, Fairbairn and Kohut. Bowlby, Ainsworth, Winicott, Fairbairn, and Kohut's concepts concerning the parent-child relationship and the effects it can have on attachment will then be integrated into one comprehensive theory, which will focus on the foundation, process, and outcome of attachment. Taking the core elements from these five theorists to create one integrated theory on parent-child attachments allows for a more linear and time extended theory. This integrated theory will take into account parent-child attachment from before conception through childhood and the prolonged effects it can have on an individual. This theory will meet Ryckman's (2000) qualifications for being a good theory by having heuristic and applied value and by being comprehensive, precise, and parsimonious.
