The purpose of this systematic literature review is to identify the various types of approaches used by occupational therapists to promote and facilitate community mobility for older adults. By revealing these approaches it is hoped the work will provide guidelines in clinical practice for occupational therapists. The population of older adults ages 65 and older is growing rapidly; simultaneously, helping them maintain independence in their communities is also growing in importance. This literature review presents an overview of the methodology used to develop the focused question pertaining to private transportation, public transportation, community mobility options, and transportation for older adults. The results revealed that the most commonly identified approaches use by occupational therapists to promote and facilitate community mobility were assessment of their current levels of function related to transportation, client education of transportation options, and hands on training of public transportation routes and needed skills. This systematic literature review includes a summary of the evidence and implications of the review for occupational therapy clinical practice, client education, and qualitative research to identify interventions effective in promoting and facilitating community mobility for the older adult population.
