Examining the trigger effect in altered states: Transpersonal hypnotherapists perceptions of effective triggers in inducing hypnotic altered states.

The focus of this study is to determine the primary triggers used by transpersonal hypnotherapists to induce hypnotic altered states. An examination of the triggers and their relevance as perceived by the transpersonal hypnotherapists shall occur. This study proposes to provide a foundation for exploration of the triggers used to promote ASC in transpersonal hypnotherapy, borrowing from extant literature in hypnosis, anthropology, ancient religions, trance, and consciousness. The use of triggers, or elaborate induction techniques with associated multilayered trigger potentialities, to induce altered states of consciousness (ASC) may be key in identifying an ease of entry and exit into anomalous realms of consciousness. Transpersonal and past-life regression therapists were interviewed to obtain their perceptions of levels of effectiveness for various trigger potentialities and techniques to achieve these ASCs. Accessing a different layer of consciousness in this modality is generally accompanied with the therapist serving as Virgilian guide to the participant. Existing neuroplastic elements associated with trigger training may permit subjects to access various altered states without the guide once a new layer of consciousness is obtained, experienced, and appropriately conditioned.
