Prevention of microbially induced corrosion in cement-lined pipelines using natural materials.

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is a well known and harmful type of corrosion that is responsible for many of the pipeline failures in different industrial applications. The oil and gas industries estimate that 30 to 90% of their serious corrosion categorized as “pitting type” is related to MIC with a direct cost of about 10 billion dollars.; The objective of this research is to reduce the microbially induced corrosion in cement-lined pipelines using two approaches. The first approach is by inhibition of the bacteria implicated in corrosion using natural biocides. The second approach is by improving the impermiability of cement lining by the reduction of macro and microcracks using natural fibers. Both methodologies are environmentally benign and economically attractive.; In this study, three sets of experiments and one set of numerical modeling exercises were conducted.
