his study compares the effectiveness of OraqixRTM vs. TAC(a) during the placement of orthodontic temporary anchorage devices (TADs) by measuring and comparing the discomfort levels of the patient, the onset time and the amount of each topical anesthetic placed on the mucosa. The study hypothesis is that TAC(a) is more effective than OraqixRTM in placing TADs, the onset time of Oraqix RTM is longer than TAC(a), and the effective dose of OraqixRTM is greater than TAC(a). Each topical anesthetic was placed on opposing sides in the maxilla or mandible using blinded applicators for a minimum of three minutes followed by the TAD placement. Based on the sample selection criteria, twenty-one patients were studied with ages ranging from 10--25 years old. During the procedure the primary investigator (PI) used the sound, eye and motor scale (SEM) to measure the movements elicited by the patient. The PI also noted the time taken for the topical anesthetic to be effective and the amount that was applied. After the completion of both TAD placements, the patients were given the Wong-Baker Faces Scale (WBS) and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) to rate the degree of discomfort. The results suggest that the SEM, WBS and VAS scales were all rated with lower values for TAC(a) which indicated that TAC (a) produced less discomfort to the patient. The time it took for the TAC(a) to provide adequate anesthesia averaged 4.43 +/- 1.57 minutes and the time it took for OraqixRTM was 6.33 +/- 2.31 minutes. The average minimum dosage of TAC(a) to provide adequate anesthesia averaged 0.25 +/- 0.05 cc and the average minimum dosage it took for OraqixRTM was 0.31 +/- 0.08 cc. IRB Approval
