Enhancement of propagule formation of Atilbe, Hemerocallis and Hosta.

The overall goal of this study was to develop methods to improve propagation techniques in the bare-root perennial field production by increasing the number of divisions per plant. Greenhouse and field experiments evaluated the effects of Rossizing, single or sequential applications of selected plant growth regulators, nitrogen fertilization, and inflorescence removal on Astilbe x arendsii , Hemerocallis spp. and Hosta spp. No significant effect on division formation was observed in greenhouse experiments following Rossizing and BA treatments. In the field, increasing nitrogen levels did not favour propagule formation. 75% of Hemerocallis plants treated with the seaweed mixture or Cycocel produced more than two divisions per plant compared to 25% for the control plants. This represents a considerable increase in yield for bare-root perennial producers. Increase in divisions was also observed following inflorescence removal for Hemerocallis and Hosta. No significant increase in division was observed for Astilbe.
