Anton Boisen is too little recognized in the study of mental disorder and religious experience. The purpose of this literature review is to determine his relevance in the modern world of psychology. Boisen is highly relevant. He found religion to be an aid in the prevention or positive outcome of psychosis in a number of ways. God becomes a positive relationship for those who cannot trust. The church provides group support where belief in self is shored up, consciences are enlightened, and goals and growth are encouraged. Confession and forgiveness provide relief from the guilt and fear from which so many schizophrenics suffer in their despair and hopelessness. Current research on cognitive deficits in schizophrenia gives credence to Boisen's work.
