Martha Gellhorn: A Mosaic of Myth, Motif and Remembrance.

This study is principally concerned with the way in which Martha Gellhorn's life and writing is remembered. Its primary focus is on Gellhorn as a writer of non-fiction. The thesis moves chronologically through Gellhorn's journalistic career, with a focus on her early journalistic experiences and her work with the Federal Emergency Relief Agency (FERA) and their influence on her development as a writer of both fiction and nonfiction, her progression to war correspondent in Spain to the highpoint of her journalistic contribution to World War II. Her work is examined for the motifs she wove throughout her work, the image she cultivated, the myth she created and the way she was remembered by her contemporaries and the way she is viewed today in popular culture.
