摘要

The use of risk assessment tools such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEAs) and Cause and Effect (C&E) diagrams is common in certain industries to mitigate risks. The tools help eliminate or reduce the occurrence of certain events and add value, because they help companies focus their improvement efforts in the highest risk areas and help identify and prevent mistakes. Subsequently, the process facilitates the implementation of control mechanisms to prevent reoccurrence.;As Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) are a leading cause of death in hospitals, The Joint Commission (TJC) requires the use of FMEAs on these critical processes. However, this requirement is not providing the expected benefits because it is not part of a risk reduction system. This paper describes how the automotive industry risk management process could be used in a hospital environment. Using this model, hospitals could finally reduce HAIs to meet accreditation requirements while saving lives.
