The Experience of Resilience in Tactical Unit Officers during Critical Incidents A Phenomenological Investigation.

The tactical unit officer's experience of resilience during critical incidents is investigated through 12 interviews with police officers on tactical units ranging from 5 to over 25 years experience in policing and were selected from departments within Southwestern Ontario. Using a qualitative research model of Phenomenolgy, the experience is presented through 8 textural themes and 7 universal structures. The textural themes revealed from the data include: (1) Preparation and Readiness; (2) Mind/body attunement; (3) Opportunities for growth of self and teammates; (4) The significance of having a positive attitude; (5) The importance of individual responsibility and having a collective sense of trust in the team; (6) Use of humour to combat negative impact of the event; (7) Identifying family and values as support and (8) Maintaining a task/goal orientation. Further analysis of data provides description of the universal structures of relationship to self, relationship to others, bodyhood, spatiality, temporality, materiality and causality. Implications and applications for law enforcement, fields of mental health and general community are discussed.
