Image-based geometric formats can be sampled from most geometric formats. They are thus proposed as a universal, cost saving representation for computer aided manufacturing. Image-based tool path calculations are implemented for surface milling, engraving, rapid prototyping, and medical rapid prototyping using three-axis milling machines.; A number of image types are implemented for storing surface data and computing tool paths. These include Boolean images, surface images, and multilevel surface images. Tool path calculations are based on morphological filtering, edge detection, region extraction, and Boolean operators. Surface images are used to represent the model surface, the machined surface, and the tool surfaces. Boolean images are used to control the application of calculations.; Surfaces that are not three-axis machinable can be produced using a cast and machine method, which is based on a multilevel surface image. The cast and machine process is used to implement rapid prototyping and medical rapid prototyping applications.; Several machining examples are provided, including lithophane art, topographical maps, engraved text, and medical prototypes. The image technique is shown to be simple and flexible. It is suitable for all forms of machining and prototyping, but is best for machining photographs and freeform surfaces.
