The effects of enteral and parenteral nutrition with arginine or citrulline, substituted for arginine, on amino acid and nitrate/nitrite (NOx) concentrations after endotoxin (LPS) challenge were evaluated in male rats. A subcutaneous inflammatory site was created. After 4 days of continuous nutrition infusions, either LPS or NaCl was administered at the inflammatory site. Three hours later the rats were exsanguinated and the plasma and exudate were collected. The plasma arginine concentration was increased for rats that received the citrulline regimens; however the exudate arginine concentration did not show similar changes. The concentration of NOx was significantly increased after LPS, but the formulation of the regimens had no effect. Future studies will be necessary before final conclusions can be made concerning the efficacy of amino acid modification in enteral and parenteral nutrition in response to LPS.
