The Use of Tension Night Splints in the Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis.

Purpose: To compare the change in pain measured by Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and self reported tolerability of a 90º neutral versus maximal dorsiflexion night splint in treating plantar fasciitis.;Results: No significant differences between the groups were found with VAS pain scores with the first few steps in the morning (p = 0.575), daily activity (p=0.291), or with activity (p=0.960).;Conclusion: Both splints effectively treated the pain associated with plantar fasciitis.;Methods: Subjects with diagnoses of plantar fasciitis and VAS pain scores of seven or over (maximum 10) with the first few steps in the morning were recruited from the general population (n =25) and randomized into one of two night splint groups, i.e. tension or neutral. The study duration was three months with monthly follow ups. Subjects completed a heel history form, FFI, and Tegner scales whereas VAS and comfort Likert scales were completed daily by the subjects.
