Master of social work students: A study of knowledge regarding cancer and the psychosocial needs of cancer patients and families.

Currently cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Psychosocial effects of cancer on patients and their families include depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and caregiver stress. Few schools of social work provide specific courses to prepare students to work with cancer patients and their families. At this time, Southern Connecticut State University Department of Social Work has limited information on how much their students understand cancer. The purpose of this study was to explore the level of knowledge of Masters of Social Work Students at Southern Connecticut State University regarding cancer and the psychosocial effects upon patients and their families throughout the course of the disease. Utilizing a random sample of MSW students, a questionnaire was administered to explore their knowledge about cancer. Findings indicate that students have a moderate degree of knowledge about cancer and the psychosocial effects of cancer on patients and families. In addition, students expressed great interest in taking courses in oncology social work and advanced diseases. It is hoped that the findings of this study will assist the Department of Social Work at Southern Connecticut State University to develop a curriculum and courses that better prepares MSW students to learn and work with individuals and their families who are diagnosed with cancer.
