摘要

Glucose homeostasis is maintained during exercise in an effort to provide a supply of glucose for glucose dependant systems. However, previous studies have shown a significant increase in total blood glucose concentration (plasma and erythrocyte) in highly trained endurance individuals following graded running exercise. Sixteen male and 15 female collegiate swimmers, ages 18--23 years, swam 5, 500-yard swims at increasing intensity prior to and following 13-weeks of swimming training. Blood samples were taken and analyzed for erythrocyte and plasma glucose levels following each 500-yard swim. Results conclude that intense swimming training causes a shift of glucose uptake to the erythrocyte when work demands increase. This supports the fact that training increases erythrocyte glucose uptake and that erythrocyte glucose uptake is an asymmetrical process.
