The need for power conservation is very pertinent and has become obvious due to the fact that the conventional resources of energy will eventually run out. There are ongoing efforts to conserve energy in various facets of life. The home is a potential domain where power conservation will provide a great over-all conservation of energy. Presently, there are appliances commercially available that might help to conserve power e.g. programmable air conditioners, water heaters, televisions etc. Human reluctance to invest money and effort in these appliances is a hurdle. Another problem is the potential discomfort an occupant might have to suffer because the appliance's programming interface might not be expressive enough to represent user's whims. This thesis aims to reactively and intelligently conserve power, while maintaining occupant's comfort and quality of life. The thesis will use a laboratory to simulate the environment of a home, with human subjects occupying it.
