The dynamics of leadership functions in a men's semi-professional basketball team in Taiwan, R.O.C (China).

The purpose of the study was to analyze and identify leaders and leadership functions of a men's semi-professional basketball team in Taiwan, R.O.C. The coaching staff and players of the Yulon basketball team in Taiwan, R.O.C. identified the strength and quality of leadership of each team member during the 2003-2004 season. In addition, selected sportscasters and sportswriters were asked to identify the most skilled player and the player contributing most to the overall welfare of the team. The coaching staff and players were also asked to determine the leadership functions to be performed by the players. After the data were analyzed, a comparison of the results with Weiller's study of a professional basketball team in the United States (1986) was conducted. Various sociograms and paired comparisons were used to collect data from players and coaching staff.; The results indicated that the Sociogram and the Paired Comparison instruments can provide appropriate data for studying leadership within a semi-professional basketball team in Taiwan, R.O.C. Additionally, the comparison of Weiller's (1986) study and the present study showed that the agreement or similarity between the players' and coaching staff's chosen leader should be in agreement. As a result of the present study, the investigator recommends that coaching staff members utilize the reported instruments and methods as an aid for improving communication with players. There was disagreement between the media personnel, the players and the coaching staff on the selection of the most effective team leader. As a result, the investigator expressed the importance of having both experienced and knowledgeable sportscasters and sportswriters in order to recognize effective leadership. This could be accomplished through the curriculum development process in sport management programs.
