Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) effects were evaluated on ten experimental soybean lines and cultivars during 2002 and 2003 at two South Dakota sites. Soybeans evaluated included Ag2302, DK B28-51, SD00-1312R, SD93-828E, SD99-026R, SD99-048R, SD99-085R, SD99-096R, SD99-99R, and T-3205RR. Plants were spray-inoculated at V3-V5 with a 1:10 extract of BPMV-infected tissue macerated in 0.02 M Na and K PO4 buffer pH 7.2 with 1% silica carbide (w/v) at 552 kPa. Comparisons of BPMV-inoculated versus non-inoculated treatments indicated that all evaluated soybeans were significantly affected by BPMV (P 0.0001). Yield losses ranged from 0.9% to 19.4% in 2002 and 16.8% to 56.6% in 2003. BPMV significantly affected test weight; number of nodes, pods, and seeds per soybean plant; number of seeds per pod; percentage of oil and protein in soybean seed; height; disease incidence; lodging; and leaf and plot ratings for mottling and distortion.
