Disinfection by-products (DBP's) are carcinogens which form during disinfection. These (DBP's) are increasingly regulated and have caused utilities to examine advanced treatment technologies to comply with the E.P.A. Control of these contaminants is focused on the precursor material which leads to their formation, natural organic matter (NOM) and bromide. Large concentrations of NOM will increase the formation of these compounds. High concentrations of the bromide ion have also shown to increase the formation and potency of DBP's.; Magnetic Ion Exchange Resin (MIEXRTM) was developed by the Orica Corporation to specifically remove NOM. The resin is smaller than typical ion exchange beads which allows it to be run in a CSTR with a magnetic component to recover the resin. While designed for NOM the properties of the resin allow it be used to remove many anionic compounds from the water. The use of this resin is still relatively uncertain for the removal of lower affinitive ions. The purpose of this study was to investigate and determine the removal characteristics of the resin for the San Francisco Bay Delta as well as simulating at the Bench, Full-Scale treatment techniques.
