In bed with the enemy: Sleeping sickness and the rise of international cooperation, 1900-1930.

Utilizing the 1907 International Conference on Sleeping Sickness and the 1925-1928 League of Nations Sleeping Sickness Conference series as a narrative framework, I explore the development of international cooperation in the field of tropical medicine in the early twentieth century. The 1907 Conference was the first moment of international collaboration in tropical medicine, an astounding feat considering the political and cultural implications of pre-World War One nationalism and imperial competition. The results of this research demonstrate a level of unprecedented international cooperation by European imperial powers that can be traced from 1907 to the eventual development of the World Health Organization. This work is part of the new historiography of networks in tropical medicine and seeks to explore the interplay between nationalism, imperialism, and tropical medicine.
