The Acceptability of Mobile Phone Technology as a Medication Adherence Intervention in the HIV-Positive Community.

he use of mobile messaging as a method of improving medication adherence has been shown to be effective, but little research has investigated smartphone application programs as a cost-effective alternative. The goal of this study was to evaluate access to smartphones and other devices as well as the willingness to use those devices to promote adherence among HIV-positive individuals. One hundred consecutive HIV-positive individuals under the care of an HIV outpatient clinic were surveyed to determine their access to and willingness to use smartphones and other mobile devices to assist with HIV medication adherence. The survey included the CASE and AACTG adherence indexes to determine adherence and reasons behind missed medication doses.
