Singing the choral music of Carlos Guastavino: An overview of his life, original works for choir and piano, and performance practice.

The choral music of Argentinean composer Carlos Vicente Guastavino (1912--2000) has been and still is still vastly and sadly underrepresented, despite sporadic and isolated efforts to re-edit and re-publish some of it through American publishing companies. Guastavino's sizable output and its artistic quality make it worthy of widespread popularity, especially considering the latest trends in American choral music performance toward more international choral music as well as multi-cultural traditions from around the world. The present doctoral essay will address and shed light on two issues involving the choral music of Guastavino: (1) the scholarly and analytical writings available in English, and (2) the South American indigenous musical traditions (specifically those from Argentina), South American musical nationalism tendencies, and Argentina's own unique Spanish dialect---all information necessary to enlighten proper performance practice.;Throughout this consideration of Guastavino's choral compositions, I attempt to strike a balance between scholarship and practicality so as to offer a user-friendly and hands-on volume for the worldwide English-speaking choral community.
