In this thesis, a novel optical modulation format, offset sideband modulation, is presented as an enabling technology for a next generation fiber to the premises transceiver. Offset sideband modulation (OSBM) refers to the use of a single laser and modulator to generate an optical carrier and a modulated sideband, which is offset from the carrier by a few gigahertz. Using incoherent (direct) detection (i.e., with a PIN diode), both the magnitude and phase of the optical signal are transferred to a digital carrier signal in the electrical domain, where they can be recovered with a simple coherent electrical receiver. OSBM, in this thesis, is created with an arbitrary optical waveform generator (AOWG), which has been useful for the compensation of optical dispersion, and self-phase modulation.;In conventional fiber to the premises (FTTp) networks, bi-directional crosstalk is an issue, as on-off keying (OOK) is used for both the upstream and downstream modulation format. Since the data in an OSBM signal resides in an offset sideband, by using OSBM as the downstream modulation format, issues pertaining to bi-directional crosstalk in a simple direct detection transceiver can be virtually eliminated by appropriate filtering in the electrical domain. This theory is applied using an inline transceiver, which is a very simple next generation FTTp transceiver. OSBM is shown to alleviate issues pertaining to bi-directional crosstalk in the FTTp system with the inline transceiver.
