Radar based microwave imaging techniques have been proposed to be used for early stage breast cancer detection. A considerable challenge for the successful implementation of these techniques is the reduction of clutter, or components of the signal originating from objects other than the tumor. In particular, the reduction of clutter from the late-time scattered fields is required in order to improve the detection and localization of small (≤ 4 mm diameter) tumors.; This thesis describes a set of signal processing algorithms designed to suppress clutter contained in radar-based microwave imaging. The formulation and analysis of the proposed algorithms are presented. The algorithms are tested with both simulated and experimental data generated from simple breast models. Results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms are promising techniques.
