The Role Of The WSR-88D In Short Range Forecasting Of Florida Panhandle Thunderstorms: A Case Study

In Florida, where small scale surface convergence zones (such as the sea breeze front and convective outflow boundaries) play an important role in the onset and devolution of deep moist convection, the WSR-88D can be an effective tool for observing these features. It is important to remember, however, that forecasters must appreciate the pre-storm environmental potential and project its evolution in order to fully utilize the radar as a tool for producing short term forecasts.
