The Storm Relative Velocity Map (SRM) product, valid for a 124 n mi radius, displays mean radial velocity with the storm motion removed. The storm motion may be calculated by either the Storm Track (STI) algorithm or may be input manually by the radar user (National Weather Service 1993). Although the WSR-88D algorithms have shown an excellent capability to identify mesocyclones, false alarms and missed detections of tornadoes do occur. As a result, timely and accurate manual recognition of mesocyclone signatures in the WSR-88D storm relative velocity products remains one of the most important duties of the operational forecaster.
