With the great progress of wireless and mobile communication technology and the rapid development of Internet, e-commerce and Web-based information systems, various wireless or mobile communication devices need the ever-increasing distributed computing capability to support their unprecedented access to online information and services. Although several kinds of distributed computing models and architectures have already been proposed, such as DCE (Distributed Computing Environment), CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) and DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model), none of them seems to be a suitable choice for supporting the distributed computing applications under the mobile or wireless communication environments. We have proposed a new agent-based distributed computing model which is quite different from the traditional ones such as DCE and CORBA etc. The inherent mobility, autonomy and asynchrony of agent have made it to be a good candidate for distributed computing based on wireless or mobile communication devices. This paper first will discuss the shortcoming of the traditional distributed computing technologies when they are used in the mobile or wireless environments. Then we will introduce the main ideas of our agent-based new model which is aiming for an efficient distributed computing for wireless or mobile client environments, and discuss how to integrate our agent-based model with other distributed computing models such as CORBA.
