Mining Policy and Exploration Strategy of the Islamic Republic of Iran for 1999 and the Third Five-Year Plan (2000-2005)

By virtue of its location within one of the world's largest metalogenic belts (Alpine-Himalayan), Iran has a vast mineral potential and the urumieh-Dokhtar volcano-plutonic belt extending across the country hosts some of the world's largest porphrycopper deposits (Sarcheshmeh, Sungun, ...). The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran gives great importance to the identification of mineral deposits and development of mines and mineral industries in order to provide the mineral raw materials for the local industries,' as well as to boost the non-oil exports during the third five-year plan, and accordingly welcomes the co-operaton of the private sector (local and foreign) for the development of these resources. The Exploration Experts Committee of Iran defined the executive mineral policy and submitted a five-year programme for the exploration of mineral deposits of the country to the supreme Exploration Council which lays down the framework of the mineral policy of country" This committee defined four stages of Exploration as... Reconnaissance, Prospecting, General Exploration and Detailed Exploration. Also the principles of Execution of Mineral Exploration in Iran has been defined as, "systematic Repional Exploration, Specific Exploration and Local Exploration". Based on the new mining law and its executive by-laws, Geological Survey of Iran has provided many facilities to solicit foreign investment in mineral exploration activities.
