The adhesion properties between bronze-plated bead wire and rubber compound were considerably improved by coating the bronze surface with benzoic acid. Pull out forces and rubber coverage of the bead wire were increased by this approach, even using as low a coating as 0.1-0.3 g per kg of the bead wire. The dispersion and the interaction between benzoic acid and bronze were systematically investigated using surface analysis techniques.
