A new system for the remote,interventionless actuation ofrndownhole completion equipment has been developed tornsupport industry needs to lower costs and preserve assetrnvalues.The traditional methods for setting a productionrnpacker employ coiled tubing or slickline to run a tubing plug.rnT e new system provides a safe,reliable and more costrneffective alternative to traditional intervention because itrnsimply transmits acoustic pulses t rough t e contents ofrntubulars to actuate one or more completion or service toolsrnremotely in any desired sequence.rnT e system not only decreases t e time to set t e packerrnbut also extends t e envelope for application to deep,rnextended-reach offshore environments.Since t e systemrneliminates t e need to circulate a ball downhole to set servicerntools during sand control operations,the operator can maintainrnconstant ydrostatic pressure on t e formation.Thisrncapability decreases completion time,intervention risk,thernpossibility of formation collapse against t e completion string,rnt e possibility of losing t e filter cake placed against t ernformation,and fluid loss to the formation.rnTo achieve the goals required for t is system,t ree projectrntargets were addressed:a reliable means of wirelessrncommunication,a surface control system,and a downholernpower unit for completion device actuation.T e design andrncapabilities of t e new surface-operated,non-interventionrncompletion system will improve completion economics.
