Total suspended solids (TSS) in wastewater effluent can have negative impacts on ultraviolet(UV) disinfection. This paper focuses on defining the role of TSS characteristics on theefficiency and efficacy of UV disinfection, and how to improve treated wastewater effluent TSSto optimize UV disinfection of wastewater effluent. Data from several different types ofwastewater facilities is presented, showing the relationship between type of biological treatmentprocess and particle size distribution. Using this information, it is possible to identify wastewaterprocess improvements in addition to tertiary filtration, which can be implemented to improvetreated effluent quality and subsequently the efficiency of UV disinfection. A discussion of thebiological process improvements that can be implemented to improve TSS conditions makingUV disinfection feasible is discussed and a case study using this approach is presented.
