The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) established disinfectionrequirements for wastewater facilities that discharge to receiving waters in the State of Kansas.The current draft permit for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County mandates thedisinfection of treated effluent from the Kaw Point Wastewater Treatment Plant (KPWWTP) byDecember 31, 2013. The KPWWTP is a pure oxygen activated sludge facility that treats a largeportion (over 50 percent) of industrial wastewater. As such, the influent wastewater is subject toinfluxes of various contaminants on an irregular basis. Studies were conducted to verify the bestdisinfection approach that could be implemented at the plant. Ozone, chlorine, and UV were allevaluated for implementation at the KPWWTP. UV was ultimately selected and testing to verifyimpacts from industrial users.
