Recent developments in the application of membrane technology to biological treatmentrn(membrane bioreactors, MBRs) prompted the Water Environment Research Foundationrn(WERF) to commission a research project to compile existing information on MBRrnapplications, develop a MBR screening and evaluation tool, and to address specific MBRrnapplication variables. This paper presents initial results from this research, includingrnidentification of the specific issues to be addressed and an overview of the MBR assessmentrntool. The issues identified have been grouped into five categories, as follows: (1)rnapplication classifications, (2) perceived benefits, (3) design considerations, (4) operationalrnissues, and (5) equipment. The MBR assessment tool will be delivered in electronic formatrnand will include a MBR “toolkit” consisting of: (1) electronic MBR instructional modules,rn(2) a published literature database, (3) a Grey literature database, (4) an installation database,rn(5) links to relevant sites on the world wide web, and (6) a preliminary process sizing tool.
