Coors Brewing Company抯 Virginia facility is located along the environmentallyrnsensitive South Fork of the Shenandoah River near the Blue Ridge Mountains andrnShenandoah National Park.rnUntil 1995, the moderately high-strength wastewater (COD = 3850 mg/l) from thernfacility was treated directly in an activated sludge plant. The high-carbohydrate,rnnutrient-deficient brewery wastewater often produced a poor-settling, bulking sludgernin the activated sludge process. Furthermore, the system was often overloaded andrnrequired significant operator attention to ensure effluent limits could be met on arnconsistent basis. The system produced a significant amount of sludge which requiredrncontinuous dewatering. Aeration energy requirements were also high.rnIn the early nineties, Coors began searching for an appropriate treatment technology
