The Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con Edison) generatesrnwastewater by cleaning utility manholes with high-pressure water and detergent. Thernwastewater primarily contains emulsified oil and grease (O&G), polychlorinatedrnbiphenyls (PCBs), and suspended solids. Prior to on-site treatment, the wastewaterrnwas disposed as hazardous waste. A facility was constructed to treat the wastewaterrnand allow permitted discharge to the storm sewer system, substantially reducing thernvolume of waste which requires disposal. The system includes oil/water separation,rnultrafiltration (UF), and carbon adsorption. It operates at a flowrate of 20 gallons-perminutern(gpm). After compliant startup and initial operation, the facility discovered highrnconcentrations of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) in the wastewater andrnexperienced pH excursions. Following minor modifications, the facility restarted withrndischarge to the sanitary sewer system.
