BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF COKE PLANT WASTEWATERS: CONCEPT TO COMPLIANCE IN NINE MONTHS

The New Boston Coke Corporation entered an agreement with the U.S. EnvironmentalrnProtection Agency on April 1, 1998 to have an operating biological treatment facility forrnthe processing of ammonia stripped coke plant wastewater by December 31, 1998. Tornaccomplish this assignment in the given nine-month schedule, Chester Engineersrnselected a field-erected package treatment unit which would process 120 gpm ofrnwastewater. This unit would operate in extended aeration mode to provide nitrificationrnof the nitrogenous waste load; provisions were also provided for up-front selectorrndenitrification. This fast track installation/construction process required a phasedrnparallel path engineering, procurement, and construction, and a team effort of bothrnengineers and constructors dedicated to delivering the facility on schedule. Thernfacility was designed, installed/constructed and started-up on schedule and within arnlimited budget.
