The biological treatment of spent aircraft de-icing fluid has been demonstrated to bernan effective method of reducing this characteristically high strength biochemicalrnoxygen demand (BOD) wastewater to an acceptable BOD level suitable for dischargernto receiving waters. During winter de-icing operations, spent de-icing fluid combinedrnwith stormwater runoff is collected and held in large treatment lagoons. When warmerrnweather arrives and de-icing operations cease, the collected de-icing fluid andrncombined stormwater runoff (de-icing runoff) are treated in aerobic lagoons to reducernthe BOD in the de-icing runoff to levels suitable for discharge to neighboring surfacernwaters.rnThis paper reviews the successful design of the De-Icing Fluid Collection andrnTreatment System at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SHIA), located inrnNew York State approximately 250 miles northwest of New York City, and summarizesrnthe results of the first two years of treatment operations. Design and operationalrnfactors that are unique to the treatment of de-icing fluids and aerobic lagoons are alsorndiscussed.
