CHANGING WASTEWATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY APPLIED TO CLEANING THE RIVER MERSEY CATCHMENT IN THE UK 1880- 2000

The North West of England, the birthplace of the industrial revolution, experiencedrnrapid growth in the textile and associated industries during the nineteenth century. Asrna result, pollution throughout the River Mersey catchment achieved national andrninternational notoriety.rnThis paper charts the developments in wastewater treatment technology, somernoriginating locally, that have aided the improvements in river quality since the nadir atrnthe start of the twentieth century.rnDescriptions of river quality at key points in the catchment are used to demonstraternthe progress made particularly since the 1960s. A review is given of the achievementsrnof the Mersey Basin Campaign from its launch in 1984 to 1998 and the work to berncarried out up to the year 2010. The aim of the Campaign is to ensure that allrnwatercourses are able to support, as a minimum, a coarse fishery.rnA map showing the catchment and a table giving a resume of the major events in thisrntime period are included.
