The steady state effect of copper discharges on nitrification in bench-scale activatedsludge treatment systems was investigated. The inhibitory effects of copper were evaluated bydetermining the changes in the performance of nitrifying and heterotrophic populationsfollowing the continuous addition of copper via influent wastewater. Comparison of nitrifiers’and heterotrophs’ response to Cu suggested that nitrifiers were more sensitive to Cu than aerobicheterotrophs. In addition, shifts in microbial community structure in activated sludge receivingcontinuous dose of copper were monitored with fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) technique.Principal component analysis (PCA) FAME results showed that the continuous addition of Cushifted community structure of activated sludges.
