The advantages of a vision system on a CNC machine would allow higher precision parts, and less mistakes in machining operations. As shown by this work the tool runout from the axis of rotation of the spindle can be measured. Averaging duplicate frames and spline fitting helped to remove random noise and increased the accuracy of the runout measurements. However, more work on the edge detection is necessary to improve the accuracy and precision of the runout measurements. It was also shown that the edge is a gradient of pixels. Improving the detection of the actual edge for the object in the image will require better algorithms.rnThe next stage of this research involves upgrading the vision system. The second generation will have more resolution, smaller pixels, faster frame rates and a higher lens magnification. This is crucial in order to see micron level spindle error motion and form errors. Also multi temporal imaging and motion image filtering will be researched to improve the measurements of the vision system. Environmental factors will also have to be addresses such as air blowers to remove chips and coolant, better lighting, or through software.
