Tubular steel transmission structures enjoy widespread use throughout the United States andrnCanada for support of high voltage electrical transmission lines. With their smaller footprint, the tubular steelrntransmission structures require less area, less vegetation maintenance, less site disturbance, fewer spoils andrnoverall, they are a more environmentally responsible option when compared to the traditional steel lattice transmissionrntowers. Due to this and other inherent advantages, there has been a dramatic increase in the demandrnfor tubular steel transmission structures on larger projects, with increased structure heights and heavier loads.rnIn this paper and presentation, the audience will hear about the opportunities and challenges encountered in therndesign and fabrication of the various types of tubular steel transmission structures.
