Changes in vision test performance: Effect of age and luminance level

Older individuals frequently complain of visual problems, particularly at light levels that are below those commonly used for clinical test. The objective of this research was to measure the effect of age and luminance variations (from 100 to 1 c/m~2) on high contrast acuity, the SKILL score, and Pelli-Robson contrast sensitivity. Increased age and reduced luminance impaired performance on all three tests. However, the Pelli-Robson test was the only one showing significantly larger losses for the older subject due to the reduced luminance.
