Abstract: Additive noise in optical imaging systems puts a fundamental restriction on the reliability of object localization and recognition in pictures. This is analyzed in the paper as a trade-off between the signal-to-noise and picture size-to-object size ratios or quantity of objects to be discriminated.!4
