In this study, an equivalent 2D plane strain solution is described which includes the effects of smear zone caused by mandrel driven vertical drains. The equivalent (transformed) permeability coefficients are incorporated in the finite element code PLAXIS, employing the modified Cam-clay theory. Numerical analysis incorporating the proposed plane strain solution is conducted to predict the performance of a full-scale test embankment constructed on soft Bangkok clay with prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) at the site of the Second Bangkok International Airport (SB1A) in Thailand and the predictions are compared with the available field data. Good agreement between the finite element results and the field data is found.
