Safe Charging of RSI (Remelt Secondary Ingot) and Other Ingot Shapes into Melting Furnaces

Safety is the first requirement when charging a melting furnace. Moisture and other contaminants have repeatedly shown that their presence on or in RSI or other charge material can be deadly. Logan Aluminum Inc., one of the largest users of RSI has extensive experience in safe use of this material. Other charge materials such as magnesium and magnesium alloy ingot present similar dangers. Steps to ensure safe use of sows or ingots include communication to suppliers of safety requirements, incoming material specifications, inspection and test, quarantine and rejection procedures, safe pre-melting processing (drying, storage, inventory tracking) and melt furnace processing. This system significantly reduces the risk of explosion during melting.
