Learning and Credential Portability: Provenance Protocol Development and Case Study

With the growth of and globalisation of the education industry has increased the number of universities establishing partnerships internationally-China University of Mining and Technology and Swinburne University among them. With this growth evidencing the credentials offered by partner universities is truly ad-hoc. Validity of credentials is at best circumstantial and hardlyefficient. The process of evidencing the origin and validity (i. e. quality of the origin) of an item over time, to keep track and uphold authentication, requires learning credential provenance. The concept and technologies of provenance have been used extensively in various industries such as: antiquities; learning; and software engineering. We explore this concept within the higher education industry. Fox and Huang's (i. e. four levels of knowledge provenance[1]) and our research explores and in due course will provide a well-defined protocol to record the changes in education programs over time. The proposed protocol will transform the management of current credentialing processes and workflows between Swinburne University of Technology and its partner universities in China into provenance-based ones as the first study.
