Migration of LORAN-C for Land-Navigation (GLORIA Results on Kinematic Tests)

The European Commission initiated GLORIA (GNSS and LORAN-C in Road and Rail Applications)rnin September 2000 in the frame of the Information Society Technologies (IST) programme. GLORIArnaims at improving the market penetration of GNSS by primarily combining it with the terrestrialrnLORAN-C positioning system and also with other systems, e.g., dead reckoning (DR) components.rnThis combination will strengthen the reliability and availability of position determination and opensrnthe door to new applications and to major improvements in the redesign of existing road and railrnapplications.rnThis article describes the motivation of migrating LORAN-C towards land navigation and formulatesrnthe requirements on that technology, to be usable for kinematic applications. Then the deducted testrntrials are described and recorded sensor data is discussed. Furthermore, LORAN-C is combined with arnDR component and the obtained results are presented.
