THE PRODUCTIVITY OF INDUSTRIAL SECTOR IN PREREFORM CHINA: A MEASUREMENT OF PRODUCTIVITY USING FIRM-LEVEL MICRO DATA

This research aims to make clear how the productivity and production technology in industrial sector in China had changed during the period preceding market-oriented economic reforms. For the purpose, we conduct the following four measurements and analysis: (1) setting and preparing a firm-level micro data in prereform China, (2) measuring the total factor productivity (TFP) for industrial sector using the firm-level micro data, (3) measuring the marginal labor productivity (MP_L) using the firm-level micro data, and (4) analyzing the structure of production technology in industrial sector in prereform China. While nowadays there are several preceding literatures that measuring China's industrial sector in prereform era, their measurements all use aggregate data and we cannot find numerical analysis using firm-level micro data in prereform China. Moreover, some preceding researches have serious problems in the selection and coverage of data used for their measurement, and the measurement procedure (Chen et al.,1988).
